At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups

A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 individuals were arrested.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, along with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by civil and military police was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.
