The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

Rai sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
