Generational goalgetter Erling Haaland earns a chance to play in his premier global event this coming summer, after leading Norway to the World Cup.

Furthermore, the 25-year-old Manchester City striker achieved it with outstanding performance, scoring 16 goals in eight World Cup preliminary games - finding the back of the net consistently in every one of those games.

This positions him as the highest scorer in 2026 World Cup preliminary stage in any continent.

And his country's 4-1 win in Italy on Sunday, featuring a Haaland brace, means they will be competing in next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Haaland, speaking afterwards: "I'm pleased, but primarily relieved. There's significant pressure and factors, and I feel it. But it's exciting."

This marks just their fourth World Cup, and their first major tournament since Euro 2000.

What Significance Was Haaland's Contribution?

Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is nothing short of phenomenal.

He has registered 55 goals in 48 matches for his country.

Additionally he is merely the sixth athlete ever, and the initial one in over five decades, to net 50 strikes in under 50 international games.

The team's earlier top scorer was Juve with 33 strikes, who kept that distinction for 90 years.

Throughout these preliminary games he netted 16 strikes - in eight matches - plus two assists.

This amounts to double the scoring total any other player has registered in European qualifying.

He remains the highest scorer in these qualifiers in any continent, including areas where teams play double the matches.

Beyond a full year has passed since Haaland most recently didn't net in a international appearance.

Collective Performance Complementing Haaland

However, it's not only about Haaland.

Team leader Martin Odegaard, 26, has more assists than any competitor in European qualifying - seven.

The Arsenal midfielder has featured in 67 matches for Norway since his first appearance at the tender age of fifteen.

"Combine Haaland's success with the fact that in this generation we also have Martin Odegaard," stated a football expert.

We're a country of five million people and we have both the best striker and I would argue the top creator, definitely among the best playmakers, in the EPL.

Historical Importance of World Cup Spot

For the first time in decades Norway fans will experience the pleasure of cheering their squad in global competition.

Their nation competed in the World Cups in 1994, 1998 and 1938, and Euro 2000.

Haaland's father, Alf-Inge Haaland, featured in the 1994 tournament.

Erling has previously said surpassing his father was a big career ambition for him.

"Norway will not win the World Cup," Haaland Jr told a major publication earlier this year.

Escaping Historical Oversight

Haaland's qualification for the global tournament with Norway guarantees he dodges his addition to the list of great players who missed World Cup action.

Three best player awardees never managed to participate in the global tournament.

George Weah, who claimed championships with various top teams, represented Liberia - who haven't qualified for a World Cup.

Famous United forward the Northern Irish star, viewed by plenty as among the best ever, was a Northern Ireland international during the 1960s and 70s when they failed to qualify.

Real Madrid legend the Argentine-Spanish star represented three national teams - Argentina, Colombia and Spain - but never got to a World Cup with any national team.
