The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Tylenol Producers Regarding Autism Allegations

Judicial Case
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump who is running for the United States Senate, claimed the drug companies of hiding potential dangers of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is taking legal action against the producers of Tylenol, claiming the companies hid safety concerns that the drug created to pediatric neurological development.

The lawsuit follows a month after Former President Trump advocated an unsubstantiated connection between consuming Tylenol - alternatively called acetaminophen - while pregnant and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

The attorney general is suing the pharmaceutical giant, which previously sold the drug, the only pain reliever recommended for women during pregnancy, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he stated they "betrayed America by making money from discomfort and pushing pills regardless of the potential hazards."

The company says there is no credible evidence connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to boost earnings," the attorney general, a Republican, said.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the safety of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also said it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is no credible data that indicates a proven link between taking paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations speaking for physicians and healthcare providers share this view.

ACOG has said paracetamol - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is a restricted selection for pregnant women to manage discomfort and fever, which can pose serious health risks if not addressed.

"In multiple decades of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in gestation, no reliable research has definitively established that the use of acetaminophen in any stage of pregnancy results in brain development issues in offspring," the organization stated.

This legal action references current declarations from the Trump administration in arguing the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, Trump raised alarms from medical authorities when he instructed women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to take acetaminophen when unwell.

Federal regulators then released a statement that physicians should contemplate reducing the use of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to initiate "comprehensive study program" that would identify the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But specialists cautioned that finding a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the outcome of a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism is a category of lifelong neurodivergence and disability that influences how persons experience and relate to the environment, and is diagnosed using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, Paxton - who supports Trump who is seeking federal office - alleges Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the science" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

The case aims to force the companies "remove any promotional materials" that states acetaminophen is secure for women during pregnancy.

This legal action mirrors the grievances of a group of mothers and fathers of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the makers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

A federal judge threw out the lawsuit, saying investigations from the parents' expert witnesses was not conclusive.
